Vegan?

I'm seriously considering adopting a vegan diet or at least WAY reducing the amount of meat, dairy products and eggs I consume. WHY? lately I have been reading a lot of information and watching videos on factory farming and how inhumanely the cows, chickens, turkeys and pigs that come these "farms" are treated. The majority of the meat (and dairy and eggs) in our grocery stores and restaurants come from these places, so it's very hard to avoid. I'm not going to go into detail about why these places are so horrible and how badly the animals are treated (its VERY disturbing) if you want more information google "factory farms" I just cannot support an industry that treats animals poorly and I don't think I could eat a hamburger now without thinking of how it probably came from a abused cow. Some of these places may be worse then others but even the "better one's" I still probably would not be ok with their methods either. I don't want to be all in your face about this and I'm not telling you to consider veganism, I'm just SO disgusted knowing what I know now, I don't know I'll ever look at meat the same way ever again and I wanted to share my feelings. I have been aware of some of this information before but I guess chose to turn a blind eye to it (ignorance is bliss right) but I can't ignore it anymore. What are your thoughts? I'm very curious

As a past lacto ovo vegetarian, and part hippy.... I would say if you feel that strongly go for it. BUT it is very very difficult to go Vegan or LO Veg. and remain healthy. I am sure you could do it, because your pretty diligent, but it is very risky and takes a LOT of work.
My suggestion, work harder at finding organic or humane sources for your meats, dairy and eggs. It's out there. Before we moved here we bought as much beef, pork, chicken, eggs from locals who do not mass produce. It costs more, but tastes better. I could never switch dairy, didn't work for me. But Canadian Dairy isn't as full of crap as US dairy.
Good luck Ashley:) There are so many things we could change, start researching how to leave less of an imprint on the earth... lots of small things we can do.

I couldn't agree more with Heather.
I used to be Vegan and I was always tired!
I felt like I couldn't really enjoy eating socially and/or without it becoming a huge issue for other people.
My diet felt really boring because being Vegan is really limiting (which is a doomed way of eating) It takes a lot of planning to eat anywhere and most restaurants don't accommodate (also expect your Mom to be super offended at Thanksgiving!)
Vegetarian is way more healthy and do able if you're disturb by the slaughter houses and animal abuse.
That's just my feeling :)

I am SO with you! One solution we have found is getting our eggs from neighbors who have their own "backyard chickens." And yeah, local (smaller, family-run) dairy farms treat their cows much better. Also, buying a whole cow (from a local, humane farming operation) and then freezing it and using it throughout the year is another way to get your nutrition and still avoid supporting companies that are morally bankrupt and abusive to the animals in their care.

I sooo agree with you on this. I think there is just something yucky about consuming meat and dairy products that are ill-gotten. It feels like I'm watching some guy abusing chickens, and then walking right up to him and giving him $5 bucks to help him keep doing it. As long as these shady farmers are financially supported by the masses, nothing will ever change.

Ash!! I totally agree with you! Everytime we go on a road trip and I see all the cute cows just chilling in the fields I can't eat meat for like a week because I feel so bad that we just go out and butcher them. Random thought, I know.
